The competition is open to all ASU students enrolled at the Tempe, Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic and West campuses as well as ASU Online students who reside in Maricopa County.

Writers may submit one selection of their work, choosing from the genre of poetry, fiction or nonfiction (e.g. essay, memoir, literary journalism/creative non-fiction). Designers may submit one graphic design for the color cover of the resulting publication.

Entries for the 2019 contest will be accepted online between January 7 and February 18, 2019.

Submissions are judged anonymously within three categories: high school student, college student (undergraduate or graduate), and community adult. One winner from each entry category is chosen for each genre.

Tempe Writing and Cover Design Contest winners are celebrated at a community reception at the Tempe Public Library, where they are invited to read from their work. Winning entries are also published in "The Tempe Writer's Forum" while runner-up selections are published on the City of Tempe website.
